Weekly Update September 22- 28, 2020

Update for week of Sept. 21st - 28th.

Have you heard???  At this time all students have the ability to eat a school lunch and breakfast for free.  The federal government extended their support to all schools to have a period of time covered for lunches and breakfasts.  We are not able to share an end date as this exception is good until the allotment of fund runs out for all school districts.  We do know that this will last for the majority of 1st semester.  Once the funds are gone the district will update parents.  This offer is for all students!!!  Remote / Hybrid / Virtual or In-person.   Remote / Hybrid families can schedule pick up at CMS from 1:00 - 1:30 Monday - Friday.

Site Council has been moved to October 6th-  Please mark your calendars.  What is Site Council?  As the name indicates, a Site Council is an advisory group comprised of staff, parents and community members.  The task this group has is to look at the operations and daily functions of the school within the working parameters provided by district and site based administration.  An example is the conversation held with our Site council regarding creating a time where personalized learning is conducted and what that means for students and staff. An upcoming conversation is to ask for input as we create a parent HOW TO on our CMS Navigating change web page.   It is not a PTO in the sense of fundraising, organizing classroom parties, or large school wide events- such as dances, etc...  One item that CMS Site council has overseen is a chili dinner and soup dinner for raising funds that have gone towards building an outdoor learning area.   We have also asked for grade level sponsors to facilitate items being brought in to serve the staff food prior to or during conferences. Mr. Adam Tripp is our parent Site Council representative.  Should you have an item that you would like added to the agenda, please email Mr. Tripp at adam.t.tripp@gmail.com .  If this sounds like a group you would be willing to serve on, please plan on attending October 6th at 7:00. We will meet in the auditorium to allow lots of space between attendees.  Please wear a mask into the building, and temperatures will be taken at the door.  Thank you ahead of time for coming.

Our original calendar indicated that there was no school scheduled for September 25th.  That has changed.  We DO have school this Friday.  Please plan on attending.

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences are coming in October so we want to take the opportunity early to begin sharing with you how these conferences will be held.  At CMS students are expected to be part of their conferences as the conversation centers around them, their progress and sharing information with parents/guardians.   The dates for conferences and the structure will be as follows:  October 19th  4:30 - 8:00:  Invitation conferences via phone or virtual.  October 21st 4:30 - 8:00:  Parent request with teachers via phone or virtual.  October 22nd 9:00 - 3:00: Parent request with teachers via phone or virtual.  A parent survey will be emailed out with questions regarding the type of conference ( phone or virtual), if at this time you need to have a conference (we will be in contact with the parents of students that we need to conference with), or if you have a few items to ask can they be answered through an email and what day/time will work with ours & your schedule.  A few other items will be included in the survey as well.  Please remember when scheduling, your student will have a part in the conference.  Thank you for being flexible during these conferences.

CMS will start our eligibility this week for games and activities held the week of October 28th. Eligibility will continue throughout first semester, and then again for second.  What this means is for any student that is involved with athletics, or a school sponsored activity such as scholars bowl (when it begins) will need to maintain their grades and not have two or more failures.  Should a student have two or more F's, the office will be in contact with parents through email and coaches will speak with the student.

Have you checked out the CMS Navigating Change site?  This is a one-stop shop for all things CMS classroom related information.  You can see when assignments are due, what is being covered in class for the week and general overall information.  This update is posted on there for the week as well.  It will also help you in having a conversation with your student, as you can ask them to show you what they are learning vs just telling you.  As said in the past- do not accept "Nothing" as the answer, they are busy busy busy!!!
