Weekly Update January 6th - 13th, 2020

Weekly Update for January 6th - 13th. I KNOW you have missed these.. Right???

Welcome back after a much needed break. We are ready for 2nd semester to get going with classes, advisement and a number of other items planned. Ask your student how they are doing on writing their Middle School Story- we reminded them today that 8th grade has one semester left to put the finishing touches on their story and 7th grade has moved past the introduction chapters to the good parts. Each story is different, and we are here to provide them with all the necessary components.

Lets have a quick conversation surrounding agendas. This is probably one of the most important yet unused tool your student has in their possession. If you would ask them, the majority of students would agree it is important for one purpose and that is for the passes. 👍😉 We are going to have students use them daily for recording what is taking place in the classrooms, filling out upcoming assignments (short and long term), notification of tests and other required assessments. As we work on communication the untapped resource is student use of agendas. I would highly encourage you to ask to see them and furthermore ask them questions about what is written in them. As this process is fine tuned we realize there are some students that already have a system in place that might be digital in nature, They can continue to use that system as long as it is visible to the teachers and you as parents. As assignments are posted into powerschool and the question we receive as educators is "How am I as a parent kept apprised that an assignment was even given out prior to seeing that it is already late?" The gap to bridge is students filling out the agenda with this information, teaching them to use this tool. Each advisory teacher will be checking the agendas, and periodically teachers will be spot checking in their respective classes. If your student needs a new agenda- they are available for purchase in the office. Replacement fee of $5.00.

We are so very excited for Wednesday late start with Chris Williams coming to talk to our students regarding diversity and opening our eyes with the manner in which we learn more about each other. He will provide us with structure and different lenses to use. With Rachel's Challenges this is another way to view our impact on the world around us and to look outside the middle school view of life with Compassion for others.
