It is hard to believe that the first quarter of school will be ending soon. We have a completed our NWEA Reading and Math testing and 4th grade will also do the NWEA Science test soon. Mr. Nibarger, from the Regional Prevention Center in El Dorado, provided information on the upcoming “Celebrate Family Day” which is being held throughout Kansas on Monday, Sept. 22. Please read the flyer that went home with your child, and participate in this worthwhile activity with your family. The more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. School is well underway and most of us have fallen into a new routine. Within that routine may be the dreaded word “homework”. I just finished reading an article on the importance of homework and its value on education. What follows is a summary of the article, You, Your Child and Homework. Homework helps kids learn! Teachers give homework to help students: Review and practice lessons, Prepare for class and Develop skills that will help them think and learn. Kids can’t learn everything they need to know in class. That’s why homework is so important. There are many kinds of homework. For example, your child may be asked to: Read Books, handouts and other materials—even newspapers, Write Reports, do spelling lists and solve math problems, Work On Projects for science, social studies and other subjects. Help from parents can make a big difference. When parents support their kid’s schoolwork, children: show more interest, get higher grades, score higher on achievement tests, learn more, learn to be responsible and most of all SUCCEED. What can you do at home to help with this process? 1) Set up a study area where your child can do homework each day 2) Schedule daily homework times and see that your child sticks to them 3) Don’t do your child’s homework 4) Help with study skills 5) Motivate your child to do his or her best! Team up with teachers, together, you can help your child put in a winning effort. |
